What better way to escape than with some CW branded, Super Hero action? This light hearted show is fun for the whole family and actually pretty addicting!

Sure, the budget isn't great and the writing may not be award winning, but the soap opera nature of this series is great fun. Not to mention, you can branch out and explore the entire Arrowverse after you finish watching The Flash.

    Official Synopsis:

"At 11, Barry Allen's life changed completely when his mother died in a freak accident and his innocent father was convicted of her murder. Orphaned Barry later becomes Detective Joe West. Comic Book Artist Spotlight: Jack Kirby

Veteran Comic Con is proud to salute Veteran comic book artists. Today, we feature the late, great Jack Kirby.

Jack Kirby is widely known for his contribution to comic book characters from Captain America to the Black Panther. But did you know that Jack Kirby also served in the military?

    Jack Kirby served in the
U.S. Army during World War II.

Kirby was drafted into the U.S. Army on June 7, 1943. He landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy on August 23, 1944, two-and-a-half months after D-Day. Kirby recalled that a lieutenant, learning that comics artist Kirby was in his command, made him a scout who would advance into towns and draw reconnaissance maps and pictures, an extremely dangerous duty,” according to his bio on Wikipedia.

    Amazin
g right? It’s no wonder Jack Kirby was responsible for the creation of so many heroes – he was a hero himself!

Jack Kirby was a comic book legend.

Jack Kirby would go on to partner with Stan Lee (whom also proudly served his country in World War II). Lee and Kirby’s work would include iconic characters like Thor, Doctor Doom, Magneto, Captain America, Black Panther, and so many more.

Jack Kirby even worked with DC Comics both early and late in his career. One of his greatest creations with DC was the “New Gods” series, which is currently planned as a
    feature film.

At Veteran Comic Con, we plan to feature as many Veteran Comic Book artists as we can on our Blog.

Comic Book Artist Spotlight: Steven Christian

    Steven Christian
is an up and coming artist, who is the grandson of a Veteran that served in the Army and retired as a Marine Machinist in the Navy after 36 years of service.

Steven hopes his comic books will help him pay for medical school and is currently interviewing at different schools. To support his work, visit: stuckonaneyeland.com or pick up his main title, “Eyelnd Feevr” on Amazon.

Read on for our interview with Steven Christian about his work and what motivates him, as well his connection to Veterans and Veteran Comic Con.

VeteranComicCon: How did you get your start in making comic books?

    StevenChristian:
“I started making comics after I had my second hip surgery when I was playing football at the University of Hawaii. My Xbox was stolen and I didn’t have anything to do while I wa
    Veteran Comic Cons recovering.

I had the idea of making
a cartoon because I was such a big fan of the Boondocks and Dragon Ball Z. After doing a bit of research, I realized making comics was a good starting point towards that goal.

After practicing for months, I saw an ad in the school paper looking for cartoonists, and I applied and got the gig. I really liked the idea of getting paid to tell quirky jokes and stories. Especially as a student-athlete because the NCAA really frown u
pon paying athletes for creative work, but tends to back off when you do creative stuff for the school.

More importantly, making comics allows me to reach people in a new way that I couldn’t do on the field.”

VeteranComicCon: Can you tell me a little bit about your work? Your style and genre?

StevenChristian: “I am a big fan of humor. With my work I like to interject humor into everything I do. I feel like life can be serious all the time and a simple laugh can go a long way.

    For the long
est time, I didn’t think that my artistic skills were good enough to garner attention, so I started incorporating a lot of saturated colors and extreme designs. It was to mask my flaws as an artist, but ended up being defining aspects of my work.

For me, I like to tell stories of characters overcoming obstacles. I use art as a medium to make the stories more relatable.

VeteranComicCon: At Veteran Comic Con, we believe that art therapy can help veterans, their families, and just people in general – do you agree with that?

StevenChristian: “Comic books have a long history of helping active military personnel learning new information and entertainment. They are great allowing people to escape to worlds they have never been.

For me, art was therapy when I was in a wheelchair after my second hip surgery. I found myself in an unhealthy space. It was often hard to find anything positive to latch on during my recovery process. Being able to work on my art for hours on end allowed me to check out of my current situation and channel my frustration into images and stories. As I got better, sharing my work helped me get positive attention from others. When I felt that my body was broken, my art was the glimmer of hope that kept me connected to the world.

As a goal oriented person, I think that art is great for people to feel accomplished with mini victories each day.

VeteranComicCon: Can you talk about your future work?

StevenChristian: “The best part about making comics is the connections you make regardless of demographics. I really enjoy non superhero comics as I become more immersed in the industry. The variety of stories being told through the medium is often mind blowing. As I progress, I have tried to find ways to incorporate technology into my work.

I will be releasing an Augmented reality app for my graphic novels that makes the experience of my work to the next level. As I try to be a doctor, I hope to incorporate what I do into my practice to increase access to health education and empower people to make healthier choices.”

Saluting Veteran Comic Book Artists: Stan Lee

Veteran Comic Con is proud to salute Veteran comic book artists. Today, we feature the late, great Stan Lee.

While Stan Lee may have sadly passed away in 2018, his legacy lives on through his work. But did you know Stan Lee was a Military Veteran? Find out more below.

Stan Lee served in the US Army, Lee entered the United States Army in 1942.

According to Wikipedia, Stan Lee “served within the US as a member of the
Signal Corps, repairing telegraph poles and other communications equipment.

He was later transferred to the Training Film Division, where he worked writing manuals,
training films, slogans, and occasionally cartooning.”Veteran Comic Con

Stan Lee’s Army division included soon-to-be-famous Theodor Geisel, later to be known as “Dr. Seuss.”

Who knew the military could breed such fantastic artists? I’d say we at Veteran Comic Con had a hunch, though!

Stan Lee served in World War II

Stan Lee proudly served his country in World War II - is it any wonder that he’s the author of so many great superheroes, like Spider-Man, Iron Man, and the X-men (just to name a few)? He’s quite the hero himself!

Stan Lee returned from his World War II military service in 1945. In fact, Stan Lee was “inducted into the Signal Corps Regimental Association and was given honorary membership of the 2nd Battalion of 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord at the 2017 Emerald City Comic Con for his prior service” according to Wikipedia.

    Comic Books and Veterans

Stan Lee and his foundation believed in the power of art, much like we do at Veteran Comic Con.

There are many more veteran comic book artists that we plan to feature on our Blog. Please subscribe, or join us to stay tuned!

Bring Joy to Veterans and Military Families at Veteran Comic ConVeteran Comic Con for Military Families , Veterans, and Comic Book Fans!

“Over 40 percent of Active Duty members and of Reserve component members have children, with an average of two children per family.” - DoD

Veteran Comic Con was created to give back to Veterans and their families. Sadly, American Veterans and Active Duty Military often suffer from PTSD or other forms of hardship from serving their country. At Veteran Comic Con, we hope to ease the pain endured by Veterans as well as their families by providing joy!

What better way to do that then with comic books?

Military Children Serve TooVeteran Comic Con

As Veterans ourselves, we understand that not only do our brave soldiers sacrifice for our country – but so do their families!

It can be difficult for children to watch their Military parent leave for months at a time, often to combat zones. It can also be difficult to move to new locations as a child of a soldier (military dependent). “Active-duty military personnel move an average of once every two to three years,” according to DoD statistics. Being deployed to a new state or even foreign country means children of military parents must change schools often and even lose contact with their childhood friends.

Our dream is to bring those families a little bit of joy – which is why we created Veteran Comic Con. We offer comic book art lessons, a yearly convention, and other programs for children of veterans and service men and women. Studies have shown that art can be therapeutic, but do we really need a study to know that Comic Books help bring joy to children and people of all ages?

While Veteran Comic Con is not strictly for children, it is definitely a big reason we exist! In fact, Veteran Comic Con is not only for military families, but for comic book lovers of all backgrounds.

Veteran Comic Con is for EVERYONE!

You don’t have to be a veteran, active duty military, or military dependent to participate in Veteran Comic Con. In fact, we recommend all comic book fans join in.  Having more people that are active in Veteran Comic Con means we have that many more people to spread joy to.

Whether that means registering for our Comic Con as an attendee or with a booth, donating for support, or volunteering – we welcome all comic book fans at Veteran Comic Con.

In conclusion, get involved and support our military veterans and their families!

You can give back by sharing our website with your friends: VeteranComicCon.org or our Social Media links: on Facebook by visiting https://www.facebook.com/veterancomiccon.org and Twitter by visiting https://twitter.com/veterancomiccon.

Veteran Comic Con is proud to feature Veteran Comic Book Artist, Anthony Dubose-McCree in our Veteran Comic Con Spotlight.

Anthony served in the US Marine Corps and served three tours of duty in Iraq as a Rifleman. Anthony put his life in danger for our country and earned the purple heart for a wound taken while in combat. Anthony retired from the Marine Corp under honorable discharge.

Anthony’s love of Comic Books started early.

As a child, Anthony picked up a love for DC Comics and Marvel characters like Spider-Man and Batman. In High School, Anthony Dubose-McCree joined VAAMP (Visual Arts and Academics Magnet Program). While in VAAMP, he cultivated his love for art by learning many different art styles such as metal work, painting, pen, and ink, etc.

Anthony used his GI bill to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in Media Arts and Animation. He then followed his dream to publish his first professional comic book.

Veteran Comic ConHow Veteran Comic Con and Anthony Dubose-McCree work to inspire Veterans:

Anthony is more than an artist; he also gives back to Veterans by instructing Veteran Artists and their families on how to create their own comic books.

Anthony knows first-hand how comic book art can be used as art therapy.
“Whatever feelings that I might be holding in, I’m able to put it on to my characters,” says Anthony Dubose-McCree.

For Veterans, comic books combine artistic expression through illustration, self-exploration through narrative, and community interaction through readership and comic book conventions.
